DoorDash Executive Among Victims in Heartbreaking Lake Tahoe Boat Tragedy
I just want to take a moment and talk about something deeply tragic that’s been making headlines—a devastating boating accident at Lake Tahoe that claimed the lives of eight people. Among the victims was Joshua Pickles, a well-respected executive at DoorDash. It’s one of those stories that really hits hard, especially when you realize how quickly a moment of joy can turn into heartbreak.
Joshua Pickles was just 37 years old. He served as DoorDash’s global head of strategic sourcing and procurement. People who knew him—both professionally and personally—described him as someone full of life, with a vibrant spirit that uplifted everyone around him. He’d been with the company for nearly seven years, and during that time, he became more than just a team member. He was an inspiration, a leader, and most of all, a friend to many.
He was on a family outing—something meant to be celebratory. They were out on Lake Tahoe to mark the 71st birthday of his mother, Paula Bozinovich. But nature had other plans. Sudden thunderstorms rolled in, winds picked up to over 34 mph, and the swells reached 6 to 8 feet. The boat they were on, a 27-foot Chris-Craft, couldn't handle the rough conditions and tragically capsized.

Joshua wasn’t alone. His mother Paula, father Terry Pickles, and uncle Peter Bayes were also on board and perished. A total of eight lives were lost, including close friends and family who had gathered to make memories. Two others survived, but the trauma and grief left behind is unimaginable.
Joshua’s wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, confirmed the loss of her husband and extended family. She spoke with raw honesty about the anguish of losing so many loved ones in what was supposed to be a joyful celebration. Yet, in her statement, she also expressed deep gratitude to the first responders—the U.S. Coast Guard, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, and multiple regional law enforcement and emergency teams. Their rapid response and dedication didn’t go unnoticed during such a horrifying event.
