Dreamland Margate Drum & Bass Festival Cut Short Amid Scorching Heat and Medical Emergency
Hey everyone, I’ve got a bit of unexpected news to share about the Dreamland Margate Drum & Bass Festival—it’s one of those moments where music meets reality in a way no one anticipated. So here’s what happened.
On what was shaping up to be a huge Saturday for drum and bass lovers, the Dreamland amusement park in Margate had to unexpectedly shut down its music event early. This wasn't your usual wrap-up; it was a serious call made by organisers who said, quite bluntly, “it was just too hot.” And it really was—temperatures across the region soared under an amber heat alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency, warning that the heat could impact everyone, not just vulnerable groups.
The festival, which was set to go until 10:45 PM, was stopped abruptly around 6:30 PM. Organisers took to social media, urging people to head home safely. The message was clear: the health and safety of everyone there had to come first. And while that’s always the right call, it was still disappointing for thousands who came to see big names like Andy C, Wilkinson, and K Motionz tear up the stage.

But the situation grew more serious. Kent Police confirmed they were responding to a “medical incident” at the venue. Details are still unfolding, but the incident cast a shadow over the event, especially with memories still fresh of 17-year-old Emily Stokes’ tragic death last year at the same location after taking MDMA.
This all happened during a weekend when the UK was bracing for record-breaking heat, with forecasts hitting up to 36°C. It’s not just the UK either—across Europe, a so-called “heat dome” is pushing temperatures into the upper 40s. Wildfires are raging in Greece, roads are melting in Italy, and cities like Lisbon and Rome are bracing for highs of 42°C and above.
The conditions at Dreamland were simply not safe for a packed crowd, pounding basslines, and relentless sun. As much as we all wanted to dance into the night, it became a moment where public health had to trump party vibes.
The police stayed on-site with extra patrols to help people leave safely, and thankfully, no major unrest was reported. But the situation is a wake-up call. With climate extremes becoming more frequent, even our favourite summer music festivals might have to rethink how they operate—especially in open-air venues under direct sun.
To everyone who made it out to Margate and had their day cut short: stay safe, stay hydrated, and let’s hope we get a cooler, safer summer for the next event.
