Earthquake Shakes Lima, Peru: One Dead, Several Injured in Sudden Tremor
Today, the city of Lima and the nearby port city of Callao were rocked by a sudden and powerful earthquake that left residents shaken and fearful. At approximately 11:35 a.m. local time on Sunday, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Peru’s central coast, with its epicenter recorded about 23 kilometers southwest of Callao, according to the United States Geological Survey. It was a brief but intense event that caused panic across the capital.
Tragically, the tremor claimed the life of a 36-year-old man in northern Lima. He was standing beside his vehicle, waiting for a passenger, when a wall from a nearby construction site’s fourth floor gave way and collapsed on top of him. It was a freak accident that highlights how unpredictable and dangerous these moments can be. In addition to the fatality, five others sustained injuries and are now being treated in hospitals.

Emergency services have confirmed damage to multiple roads and some educational centers, and various parts of Lima reported minor structural damage. Scenes from local media showed debris littering the streets—cars hit by falling objects, houses with visible cracks, and billboards completely brought down. Even everyday activities were disrupted. A mass in Lima’s cathedral was halted as terrified worshippers fled the building, and a professional football match at the Alberto Gallardo Stadium was temporarily paused.
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has taken immediate action, traveling to the affected region of Callao to oversee the response efforts. While the USGS recorded the magnitude as 5.6, Peru’s own geological authorities reported it slightly higher at 6.1. Thankfully, there was no tsunami warning issued in the aftermath.
This incident is a stark reminder of Peru’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Positioned along the infamous “Ring of Fire,” Peru frequently experiences earthquakes due to the intense tectonic activity in the region. In fact, it sees over 100 detectable quakes each year. While many are minor and go unnoticed, some, like this one, serve as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability.
People in Lima are now returning to their routines, but the unease lingers. It’s a moment of reflection for many—about the importance of safety measures, building codes, and emergency preparedness in a country where the ground can shift at any moment.
