From Fog to Thunder: Weather Shifts for the Last Weekend of June

As we wrap up the final full week of June, the weather is giving us a bit of everything—from foggy mornings to the threat of severe storms, and even a sneak peek at summer warmth. If you're heading out the door this morning, don't forget to be extra cautious on the roads. Thick fog and a light drizzle are hanging over the region thanks to lingering moisture from yesterday’s rain. Visibility has been reduced in several areas, making the morning commute a bit tricky. But don’t worry—those conditions won’t last all day.

Later this morning, the fog and drizzle are expected to taper off. While we’re not expecting clear skies, the cloud cover should lighten up as a weak high pressure system moves in. That could give us a few breaks of sunshine, especially during the afternoon hours. Temperatures will climb into the mid-70s, making for a pleasant and comfortable day overall—perfect if you're planning to attend any outdoor events or music festivals.

However, this calm spell is short-lived. As we move into the weekend, we’re in for a shift—both in temperature and in intensity. A warm front will move into the region, pushing temperatures into the low to mid-80s and cranking up the humidity. That muggy air will make things feel sticky, and unfortunately, it also sets the stage for some active weather.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop by Saturday, just in time for events like the Chippewa Valley Air Show. Some of these storms could be strong. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center has already marked areas like Polk, Pierce, and St. Croix counties with a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather. Further east, there's a marginal (level 1) risk. We’re talking about the possibility of damaging winds, hail, and even isolated tornadoes. So, if you’re making weekend plans—especially outdoors—keep an eye on the radar and be weather-aware.

The unsettled pattern continues into Sunday, with a cold front sweeping through and bringing another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Once that front passes, we’ll finally get some relief. Early next week looks brighter and cooler, with highs in the low to mid-80s and plenty of sunshine, especially by Tuesday.

But don’t pack away your umbrella just yet. The dry spell won’t last too long. Rain chances return by Thursday, and as of now, it looks like those showers could stretch right into the Fourth of July holiday. So enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, and stay prepared for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us next.
