Hank Winchester Placed on Leave Amid External Investigation

Hey everyone, so there’s been a lot of buzz lately surrounding a familiar face from Detroit’s news scene—Hank Winchester from WDIV Local 4. If you’ve watched the news in Metro Detroit for any amount of time, you’ve definitely seen Hank. He’s the award-winning investigative journalist who leads the “Help Me Hank” team and has been a trusted consumer advocate in our community since 2001. But as of this week, things have taken a surprising turn.

On June 18, WDIV issued a formal statement confirming that Hank Winchester has been placed on administrative leave. The station acknowledged that an “external investigation” is underway, though they were very clear in stating that no further comments will be made while the process is ongoing. The announcement came directly from Bob Ellis, Vice President and General Manager at WDIV, who said that although the station has been made aware of the situation, they are refraining from elaborating until the investigation concludes.

What’s really drawing public attention is the fact that law enforcement did execute a search warrant at Hank’s home in Beverly Hills, Michigan, just days earlier, on June 13. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed their involvement, noting they assisted Beverly Hills Police with the warrant, but they also made it clear—this is Beverly Hills Police’s case to lead. As of now, that department has not released further details about the nature or origin of the investigation.

Hank’s attorney, Todd Flood, released a statement defending his client. He pointed out that when someone holds a high-profile role in the public eye—especially one built on exposing fraud and demanding accountability—it can unfortunately open the door to unfounded allegations. Flood was adamant that this entire situation will “end where it began — nowhere.”

It’s worth remembering that Hank Winchester has spent over two decades building trust in this community, taking on scams, bad business practices, and fighting for everyday Detroiters. He's not just a reporter—he’s been a real advocate for consumer rights. He’s also well-known for his friendships with notable figures like former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and Stafford’s wife, Kelly, with whom he co-hosts a podcast called The Morning After .

Now, it’s important to stay grounded and remember that investigations do not equal guilt. We still don’t know the details of what’s being looked into, and no charges or allegations have been publicly confirmed. The journalistic world, especially in a city like Detroit, runs on trust—and for many, Hank Winchester has earned that trust. We’ll have to wait and see how this unfolds, but as of now, he remains off the air while the investigation continues.

Until more facts come to light, that’s where things stand.
