Jason Kidd Likely Staying with Mavericks Despite Knicks Interest
So there’s been a lot of buzz lately around Jason Kidd and the possibility of him leaving the Dallas Mavericks to take over as head coach of the New York Knicks. But here’s what’s really going on—and it’s not what you might think.
Despite all the speculation swirling around, sources close to the situation say Kidd is not expected to leave Dallas. The Mavericks seem pretty firm on that point. According to reports from The Athletic, Dallas has made it clear to internal stakeholders that they believe Kidd will be staying put, and as of the latest updates, the Knicks haven’t even officially requested permission to speak with him.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. The Knicks, fresh off firing Tom Thibodeau, are definitely interested in Kidd. That’s no secret. They’re looking for a big name to take over, especially after making it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. But the Mavericks believe Kidd is using this interest as leverage for a better deal with them—a contract extension, most likely. He still has two years left on his current deal, but it sounds like he wouldn’t mind some extra job security.
If you’re wondering whether Kidd could pull a fast one on Dallas like he did back in 2012—when he was expected to re-sign with the Mavericks as a player but instead joined the Knicks—that's a fair question. There's precedent. But right now, things feel different. Kidd has been seen at the Mavs’ practice facility, working as usual. Nothing about his behavior suggests he’s about to bolt.
Plus, Dallas has been actively working on its coaching staff, recently negotiating with Jay Triano, formerly with the Raptors and Kings, to come on as lead assistant. That move reportedly came with the assurance from Mavericks GM Nico Harrison that Kidd would stay on as head coach. And Triano agreed to the deal, which tells you he believes Kidd isn’t going anywhere.
It’s also worth noting that Kidd has a solid connection with Knicks star Jalen Brunson, who he coached in Dallas. There’s a storyline there that makes sense—a possible reunion—but Dallas is downplaying it. Internally, they seem confident Kidd is committed.
So, while the Knicks may still be holding out hope, don’t expect Jason Kidd to be heading to New York anytime soon. It looks like he’s staying in Dallas, at least for now.
