Jon Bernthal Returns as The Punisher inSpider-Man: Brand New Day
Hey everyone, have you heard the big news coming out of the Marvel Universe? It's official—Jon Bernthal is stepping back into the role of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher , and this time, he’s joining Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day . That’s right, Bernthal, who gave us one of the grittiest and most compelling versions of the Punisher in Netflix’s Daredevil and his own spin-off series, is now heading to the big screen alongside everyone’s favorite wall-crawler.
The new Spider-Man film, titled Brand New Day , is shrouded in secrecy for now, but what we do know is enough to get any Marvel fan seriously hyped. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the movie, which starts filming this summer in England and is set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026. Alongside Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are returning as MJ and Ned, though their roles seem to be more limited this time around. Another exciting addition is Stranger Things star Sadie Sink—how she fits into the story is still unknown, but the casting alone is a win.

Spider-Man story—he was originally hired to take Spidey down. Over the years, their dynamic has evolved from enemies to uneasy allies, often operating in the same New York streets but with very different moral codes. With Peter Parker now a man with no one left—no Aunt May, no Tony Stark, and no memory of him in his closest friends—there’s a strong chance he might find some unexpected common ground with Castle.
Bernthal’s version of the Punisher has always been dark, raw, and very R-rated, so it’ll be interesting to see how Marvel blends his intense style into the more PG-13 tone of Spider-Man’s world. That said, this could hint at a slightly darker, more grounded direction for the film. After the multiverse chaos of No Way Home , a gritty street-level tale might be exactly what Spidey needs—and who better to help him navigate that than Frank Castle?
And let’s not forget the timing. Brand New Day is scheduled just five months before Avengers: Doomsday , so this film will likely play a key role in the MCU’s larger build-up to Secret Wars . We might see alliances form, unexpected enemies surface, or even hints at future showdowns between heroes and antiheroes alike. There's even some buzz that multiple villains and maybe even another version of the Hulk could show up in this film.
For fans of Bernthal, there’s even more to celebrate—he’s not only returning for season two of Daredevil: Born Again , but he's also co-writing and starring in a standalone Punisher film for Disney+. Marvel seems to be fully committing to his version of the character, and it's easy to see why—Bernthal is Frank Castle.
So the big question now is this: when Peter Parker and Frank Castle finally meet on the big screen, will they be friends, foes, or something in between? One thing’s for sure— Spider-Man: Brand New Day just became one of the most anticipated films in the MCU slate.
