Kes Makes History as Budweiser Stage's First Soca Headliner

Let me tell you something truly exciting—something that’s about to go down in Toronto’s music scene and Caribbean culture history. On June 14th, 2025, Kes the Band will become the very first soca group to headline the iconic Budweiser Stage. Yes, you heard that right. After 20 years of bringing Caribbean rhythm to the world, Kes is taking soca to a whole new level—right on the Toronto waterfront, in front of thousands. And honestly, this moment is more than just a concert. It’s a full-circle celebration.

Lead singer Kees Dieffenthaller shared just how meaningful this is for him and the band. Toronto holds a special place in his heart. It was the first international city Kes ever performed in back in 2005, right after the band launched. So, to return here two decades later, now as trailblazers, is nothing short of poetic. “This is a full circle moment,” Kees said at a recent social mixer in the city. “Soca has always been the heartbeat of the Toronto Carnival, and now it’s time to put it in spaces where it can shine in its full glory.”

And shine it will. Though the full lineup of supporting acts remains under wraps, Kes hinted that “friends” will be joining them on stage for what promises to be a vibrant, high-energy showcase of Caribbean culture and unity. What makes this even more special is the recognition Kes is receiving. The Trinidad & Tobago Consul General in Toronto, Simone Young, presented the band with a Cultural Impact Award, celebrating how they’ve carried the soul of the Caribbean across borders and generations.

From hits like “Hello” to the Carnival anthem “Savannah Grass,” and the unforgettable “Wotless,” their songs have become soundtracks of joy, love, and cultural pride for soca fans everywhere. In fact, it was in Toronto during a winter escape in 2010 that Kees and Canadian-based soca artist Kerwin Du Bois co-wrote “Wotless”—a song that went on to win big and get international acclaim.

This Budweiser Stage performance is also the result of strong partnerships. Live Nation and Summer of Sound Festival Inc. have joined forces to make this historic event happen. Founders Naveen Sharma and Andrew Lalla, recognized by the Trinidad & Tobago Association of Ontario, have spent over a decade pushing Caribbean music onto world-class stages. What started as a bold dream at the International Centre has now evolved into something massive—something unforgettable.

At its core, this event is not just about Kes or soca music. It’s about legacy, community, and cultural pride. It’s about a Caribbean rhythm that refuses to stay in the background. So whether you’re from Trinidad, Toronto, or anywhere in between, June 14th is your moment too.

Soca is here. On the big stage. Where it belongs.
