Malik Beasley Faces Gambling Probe as Pistons Freeze Contract Talks
So here’s the latest buzz in the NBA world—and it’s pretty serious. Malik Beasley, one of the top free agents this offseason, is now at the center of a federal gambling investigation. The U.S. District Attorney’s office is reportedly looking into allegations that Beasley may have been involved in gambling activity tied to NBA games, including potential prop bets.
This is especially shocking given the kind of season Beasley just had. He played all 82 games this past year, averaging 16.3 points per game. He wasn’t just consistent—he was lights out from deep. Beasley made 319 three-pointers, ranking second in the entire league behind only Anthony Edwards, and he shot a career-best 42% from three. That kind of shooting is rare. In fact, he became just the third player in NBA history to knock down 300 or more threes in a season while maintaining at least a 40% shooting clip from long range.

Given all that, it’s no surprise the Detroit Pistons were deep in talks to bring him back on a new deal. Reports suggested they were nearing a three-year, $42–45 million contract extension. But now, with this investigation unfolding, those discussions have come to a hard stop.
Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, made it clear that his client hasn’t been charged and reminded everyone that an investigation doesn’t equal guilt. He emphasized that Beasley, like anyone else under the Constitution, deserves the presumption of innocence.
Still, the optics are tough. This isn’t the first time gambling has rocked the NBA recently. Just last year, Johntay Porter was banned for life for betting-related violations. While Beasley hasn’t been charged or banned, the NBA has been firm about its stance on gambling, especially when it comes to active players betting on their own games or league outcomes.
As of now, there aren’t many details about what exactly Beasley is accused of doing. Is it just speculation? Was it a misunderstanding? Or is there something deeper? We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out in the coming weeks.
For now, Beasley’s future in the league—and certainly in Detroit—is up in the air. One thing’s for sure: this story isn’t going away anytime soon.
