Marner-to-Vegas Trade Buzz Heating Up Ahead of Free Agency Frenzy
The NHL offseason is already crackling with big moves and juicy rumors, but nothing quite compares to the latest chatter surrounding Mitch Marner and a potential blockbuster trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vegas Golden Knights. It’s a seismic shift in the making—one that’s stirring strong opinions across the league and fanbases alike.
According to reports from respected insiders like Elliotte Friedman and Bruce Garrioch, the Leafs and Golden Knights are deep in discussions for a sign-and-trade deal that would send Marner to Vegas. This would allow the Golden Knights to lock him up for eight years, something only Toronto can offer due to NHL contract rules. In return, names like forward Nicolas Roy and defenseman Nicolas Hague have emerged as the main pieces Toronto would receive.

For Vegas, the motivation is clear. By acting now, they avoid bidding wars when free agency opens and ensure they get their guy with term. Pairing Marner with Jack Eichel and Mark Stone could give the Golden Knights arguably the most electrifying forward group in the NHL. Marner is coming off a career year—27 goals, 102 points, +18 rating—and would add elite playmaking, power play punch, and defensive responsibility. Not to mention, the absence of state income tax in Nevada sweetens the deal financially for him.
The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, are facing the reality that Marner isn’t re-signing. Rather than lose him for nothing, getting Roy—a reliable third-line center with solid faceoff skills and playoff experience—and Hague—a rugged top-four defenseman—could be a win. Roy brings versatility and consistency, while Hague adds much-needed grit and size to a Leafs blue line that has often lacked edge.
There’s a catch, though. By moving Hague and potentially placing Alex Pietrangelo on LTIR, Vegas risks exposing their defensive depth. That’s a gamble for a team trying to remain in Cup contention, especially with an aging core and a cap situation that’s tightening fast.
