Measles Cases Rise in the UK: Urgent Call for MMR Vaccinations Before Summer Travel
Hey everyone, I want to talk about something really important that’s making headlines right now—measles outbreaks are on the rise again in England, and it’s causing serious concern, especially with the summer holidays just around the corner. The latest update from the UK Health Security Agency shows that measles is spreading, particularly among unvaccinated children. Just in April, 109 cases were confirmed, and in May, another 86. Since January, we've seen a total of 420 lab-confirmed cases across England.
What’s particularly alarming is that two-thirds of these cases—276 out of 420—have been in children aged 10 and under. London has reported the highest number, with almost 40% of cases, and it’s not just there. Outbreaks have also popped up in the North West, West Midlands, and other regions.

And it’s not just a UK issue. Globally, measles is seeing a dramatic increase. The World Health Organization and UNICEF have reported over 127,000 cases across Europe in 2024 alone—double the number from 2023. Countries like France, Italy, Germany, and Spain are seeing significant surges, and the risk is high that travellers this summer could bring the virus back into the UK or catch it while abroad.
Here’s the thing: measles is highly contagious and can lead to very serious complications like ear infections, pneumonia, and even brain inflammation. It spreads easily through coughs and sneezes. And while most people recover in about 10 days, some children end up in hospital and suffer long-term effects. Babies under one and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable and rely on the rest of us being vaccinated to keep them safe.
The MMR vaccine is the best protection we have. It’s free through the NHS and given in two doses—one at age one and another around three years and four months. If you or your children haven’t had both doses, it’s not too late to catch up. Just check your child’s Red Book or contact your GP. It’s also important for teenagers, young adults, and anyone planning to travel, go to university, or work in healthcare or childcare to make sure they’re protected.
The bottom line? Measles is back, and it spreads fast. With summer holidays approaching, now is the time to act. Getting vaccinated doesn’t just protect you—it protects everyone around you. Let’s not wait for another big outbreak to remind us why vaccines matter. Check your records, talk to your GP, and make sure your family is covered before heading off this summer.
