Palmeiras Outclass Al Ahly with Convincing Win at Club World Cup 2025
What a performance we just witnessed from Palmeiras in their crucial Club World Cup 2025 group stage clash against Al Ahly. The match, held at the MetLife Stadium, was packed with intensity, drama, and most importantly—goals that truly showcased Palmeiras' attacking depth and resilience.
The first half had its fair share of aggression and missed chances, but it was the second half where Palmeiras truly came alive. Right from the start of the second 45 minutes, we saw tactical switches from Palmeiras that changed the momentum. The double substitution—with José López and MaurÃcio coming on—proved to be a game-changer.
The breakthrough came in the 48th minute, albeit under unusual circumstances. Al Ahly’s Wessam Abou Ali, in an unfortunate twist, turned the ball into his own net under pressure from a relentless Palmeiras attack. That own goal gave Palmeiras a 1-0 lead and the psychological edge they were searching for.
And they didn’t stop there.

Just ten minutes later, in the 58th minute, José López—who had just come off the bench—capitalized on a brilliantly timed through ball from MaurÃcio. López calmly slotted it past El Shenawy with a composed left-foot finish into the bottom corner. It was a textbook example of how swift counterattacks and clinical finishing can completely dismantle even a disciplined defensive unit like Al Ahly’s.
Al Ahly, to their credit, did try to mount a response. Players like Trezeguet and Zizo kept pushing forward, but the absence of their star man Emam Ashour due to injury was clearly felt. Despite several free kicks and corners, they failed to significantly test Weverton in Palmeiras’ goal.
Palmeiras played with a clear tactical plan: press high, dominate possession when possible, and strike with pace. Facundo Torres and Estêvão were electric on the wings, constantly stretching Al Ahly’s backline and winning crucial fouls that slowed down the Egyptians' rhythm.
By the final whistle, the scoreboard read 2-0 in favor of Palmeiras—a fair reflection of the game’s flow. Not only did they secure a crucial three points, but they also put themselves in a strong position to advance from Group A, especially with one group match remaining.
From a broader perspective, this win also cements Palmeiras’ status as serious contenders in this revamped Club World Cup. They’ve shown they can adjust mid-game, utilize their bench strength effectively, and most importantly—deliver under pressure.
As for Al Ahly, it’s back to the drawing board. They'll need to regroup quickly if they hope to qualify for the knockout rounds, and perhaps find new ways to fill the creative void left by Ashour’s absence.
But today, it’s all about Palmeiras. Clinical. Confident. Commanding.
