Queensland Feels the Heat as Power Prices Surge Across the East Coast
If you live in Queensland and you’ve been wondering why your electricity bill keeps creeping up — brace yourself. A major price hike is about to hit from July 1, and while some states may suffer more, Queenslanders aren’t escaping the sting either.
This news came as a bit of a suckerpunch to many of us. AGL and Origin Energy have now confirmed new pricing structures for millions of customers across the eastern seaboard. In Queensland, power bills are set to rise by 7.5%. Now, that might seem lower compared to the 13.5% hike in New South Wales or the 8% rise in South Australia, but it’s still a significant jump — and it’s happening when many families are already doing it tough with the cost of living spiraling.

Energy experts are calling it a "suckerpunch", and it’s easy to see why. At a time when groceries, rent, and petrol are all climbing, electricity – a non-negotiable essential – is now adding even more pressure to household budgets. And what’s frustrating for many is that the promised price caps, brought in by the government to curb rising energy costs, haven’t worked as intended. Critics, including Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor, say the federal government's strategy has failed, pointing to these increases as clear evidence.
Now, it’s not all bad news. There is some help coming. The federal government has announced a $150 automatic electricity discount for all households, and in some states like Victoria, concession card holders will receive an additional $100 in relief. But even with these rebates, the advice remains clear: shop around.
Electricity retailers are competing harder than ever for customers, and by comparing plans and switching providers, some households could save hundreds. Sally Tindall from Canstar put it best — “Don’t get mad, get even.”
So here’s the bottom line — Queenslanders will still feel the burn of higher power bills, but if you take the time to compare your energy plan and reach out to your provider for any hardship options, you might just lighten the load. Don’t wait until your next bill arrives to act — there are options, and every dollar saved matters more than ever right now.
