Remembering Jonathan Joss: A Voice Silenced Too Soon
It’s with a heavy heart that I share some tragic news about a beloved figure in television and Native American representation—Jonathan Joss, the talented voice actor best known for bringing John Redcorn to life in the iconic animated series King of the Hill , has been killed in a shooting in San Antonio, Texas.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, the incident took place Saturday night on Dorsey Drive. Officers responded to a call about a shooting in progress around 7 p.m. and found Joss, full name Jonathan Joss Gonzales, near the road suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. He was just 59 years old. The suspected shooter, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, has been arrested and charged with murder.
This is a devastating loss not only for fans of King of the Hill but for the wider entertainment community and Indigenous representation in media. Jonathan Joss stepped into the role of John Redcorn following the death of original voice actor Victor Aaron. He gave the character depth, heart, and authenticity, becoming a standout presence on a show known for its nuanced portrayal of American life.

But his work didn’t stop there. Joss also made memorable appearances in series like Parks and Recreation , where he portrayed Ken Hotate, and had supporting roles in high-profile projects such as Tulsa King and the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven . More recently, he lent his voice to a character in the acclaimed video game Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty , showing his continued relevance and range in the ever-evolving entertainment landscape.
For many Native American viewers and fans of authentic representation, Jonathan Joss wasn’t just an actor—he was a rare voice in a space that too often overlooks Indigenous talent. He brought integrity and cultural resonance to every role he played, challenging stereotypes and opening doors for others to follow.
As we reflect on his legacy, we’re reminded of the power of storytelling and the voices behind those stories. Jonathan Joss's contributions will not be forgotten. His talent, warmth, and dedication to meaningful representation will continue to resonate through the characters he brought to life.
Rest in peace, Jonathan Joss. Your voice made a difference, and it will echo on.
