Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued Across the Maritimes
Hey everyone, just wanted to bring your attention to something really important happening right now in our region. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued across parts of the Maritimes, and it's something we should all be paying close attention to. If you're in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island , or Newfoundland and Labrador , it's a good time to be weather-aware and stay updated through local forecasts.

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell has been closely tracking the development of this storm system, and it looks like we’re in for some intense weather, particularly today. The atmosphere is setting up just right—or wrong, depending on how you look at it—for thunderstorm activity. Conditions are ripe with high humidity, warm temperatures, and an approaching weather front that could trigger strong thunderstorms throughout the day and into the evening .
Now, just to clarify— a watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms. It doesn’t necessarily mean they are happening yet, but it’s a heads-up to stay prepared. Severe thunderstorms can bring with them heavy rain, strong winds, large hail, and even the potential for localized flooding . Depending on how things evolve, these watches can also be upgraded to warnings , which would mean severe weather is imminent or already occurring.
What’s interesting is that this will all likely transition into cooler weather by Friday , so this system seems to be part of a larger shift in our regional weather pattern. That might be some relief after today, but it also signals that these storms could be packing a punch as they move through.
If you're planning to be out and about today, I highly recommend you check local forecasts frequently , and maybe postpone any outdoor activities until this system passes. Make sure your phones are charged, and your weather alerts are turned on. It might not hurt to secure loose outdoor items around your home just in case the wind picks up suddenly.
Again, we’re still in the “watch” stage, but as always with weather in the Maritimes, things can change fast. Let’s all stay safe, stay dry, and look out for one another. I’ll keep an eye on things and share more updates if needed.
