Taylor Pendrith Shines Bright at RBC Canadian Open as Nick Taylor Lurks Close Behind
What a start to the RBC Canadian Open! If you're a Canadian golf fan, you’ve got every reason to be fired up. Taylor Pendrith just lit up TPC Toronto with an opening round 65, putting him at 5-under and holding the clubhouse lead. The way he closed his round — four birdies on the back nine — was nothing short of impressive. You could feel the momentum building with every hole. He looked composed, confident, and totally in command.
Pendrith himself said it best: he drove the ball really well and gave himself great chances by hitting a lot of fairways. His irons, especially the mid and long ones, were dialed in. While he did admit to struggling a bit with wedge control due to the soft greens, it clearly didn’t derail his rhythm. When you're hitting it as solidly as Pendrith was today, you can get away with a few misfires. It was a strong, complete performance, and you could sense that he's playing with a lot of belief right now.

Right on his heels, though, is another Canadian crowd favorite — Nick Taylor. Just one shot back at 4-under, Taylor looked sharp and focused. He came out of the gate hot with two early birdies and showed real resilience after his lone bogey, bouncing back with three more birdies before dropping a shot on the final hole. Still, a 66 is a fantastic start. He mentioned his putting was especially strong — those mid-range birdie putts were falling when he needed them most.
And let’s not forget Mackenzie Hughes, who made a splash of his own with a 2-under 68, thanks in part to an electrifying eagle from 194 yards out on the par-4 fifth hole. That kind of shot sends a jolt through the course and gets the fans buzzing. With Hughes, Pendrith, and Taylor all in contention, there’s a real Canadian surge happening — and the energy is contagious.
While the Canadian trio stole the spotlight, Rory McIlroy — a two-time Canadian Open champion — had a bit of a rough outing. He finished 1-over after giving away two strokes on the final two holes. It wasn’t the start he wanted, especially coming off a Grand Slam win, but you can never count him out. There’s a lot of golf left.
As the week unfolds, eyes will remain on this trio of Canadian stars. Pendrith has set the pace, but with Taylor just one shot back and Hughes showing flashes of brilliance, this could be a historic tournament for Canadian golf. Whatever happens next, it’s clear: this year’s Canadian Open is off to a thrilling start.
