Tragedy Strikes Again at Verdun Beach: Another Young Life Lost to Drowning
I want to take a moment to talk about something that hit hard — a somber event that unfolded just yesterday at Verdun Beach in Montreal. A young man in his twenties, full of life and future ahead of him, was found dead after vanishing into the waters. It's heartbreaking, and even more concerning when we realize this is the second drowning at Verdun Beach in less than three weeks.
Here’s what happened. Around 4 PM, police officers already present at the beach were alerted by a beachgoer who noticed his friend — a 21-year-old man — had disappeared while swimming near the shore. At first, people didn’t realize the gravity of the situation. Families were still laying out towels, children were playing in the sand, and the summer vibe was in full swing. But soon enough, the atmosphere shifted.
The beach was promptly closed. Lifeguards, emergency services, and even the Coast Guard moved into action. Drones scanned the waters from above while boats crisscrossed the river, hoping for a miracle. People at the beach were ushered away as a large perimeter was secured for the search. But after hours of intense efforts, around 8 PM, the young man’s body was found. Lifeless. His death, according to initial reports from the SPVM, appears to be accidental — a tragic drowning.

What makes this story even more painful is that his friend watched it all unfold, helpless. He had seen him go under, alerted lifeguards, but by the time help arrived, it was too late. The shock and grief in his voice, as reported by La Presse, were palpable.
This is not an isolated incident. Back on June 7, another young man, only 20 years old, drowned at the very same beach after suffering a sudden illness in the water. That makes four similar incidents at Verdun Beach in just two years. Clearly, there is a pattern here — one that can no longer be dismissed.
Rescue teams did everything they could. Montreal's fire department, police units, the Coast Guard, even citizens on jet skis contributed to the search. Still, the loss of life is a reminder that despite the beauty and calm of summer, water safety must always remain a priority.
As of now, the coroner’s office has taken over to determine the exact circumstances. But the broader question lingers: are there enough safety measures in place? Is awareness strong enough among swimmers, especially younger ones?
Verdun Beach is expected to reopen as usual today, but I hope this event makes us pause. Behind the news headlines is a family mourning their son, a friend struggling with guilt and grief, and a community left with a haunting sense of déjà vu. If there’s one thing we should take away from this, it’s that safety can never be an afterthought — not at the beach, not anywhere.
Let’s take care of each other out there.
