Tropical Storm Barbara Gathers Strength Off Mexico’s Coast
Right now, all eyes are on Tropical Storm Barbara as it stirs up powerful winds and heavy rain just off Mexico’s Pacific coast. As of late Sunday, the storm was gaining strength and was forecasted to possibly become a hurricane by Monday. Sitting about 235 miles southwest of the resort town of Zihuatanejo in Guerrero state, Barbara already had sustained winds of 65 mph—or about 100 kilometers per hour—and was moving in a west-northwest direction at around 10 mph. What makes this storm particularly noteworthy isn’t just its strength, but also the dangerous weather it's expected to bring to parts of Mexico’s western coastline.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, while Barbara is likely to stay offshore, it’s still packing enough force to drench coastal regions like Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco. Rainfall in these areas is forecasted to range from 2 to 4 inches, with some spots potentially getting up to 6 inches. That much rain, in a short period, could lead to flash flooding and mudslides, especially in mountainous terrain. Emergency officials and residents are being advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

Beyond the rain, another threat is already forming: dangerous ocean swells. Coastal communities can expect high surf and deadly rip current conditions for the next few days. These are the kinds of waves that not only flood low-lying beach areas but also pose a real risk to swimmers, surfers, and even boats operating close to shore.
Interestingly, Tropical Storm Barbara isn’t alone out there. Another system, Tropical Storm Cosme, has formed further south and west. While Cosme currently poses no threat to land, it's also strengthening and could reach near-hurricane status soon. It’s moving northwest at around 9 mph, and its winds are already at 45 mph.
This kind of activity so early in the season suggests that 2025’s Pacific hurricane season could be a busy one. Already, forecasters are warning that several more storms could be on the way, fueled by favorable atmospheric conditions and warm sea surface temperatures. We’ve already seen Tropical Storm Alvin earlier this year, and now with Barbara and Cosme making waves, the message is clear: coastal communities across Mexico and surrounding regions need to stay prepared.
Right now, Barbara may not be aiming for a direct hit on land, but its indirect impact is already being felt. Flooding, landslides, dangerous surf—it’s all on the table. And with hurricane season just getting started, it’s a stark reminder that nature doesn’t wait. So if you’re anywhere near Mexico’s Pacific coast, keep an eye on the updates, follow safety guidance from local authorities, and stay alert as this storm plays out over the next few days.
