Vicky McClure’s Secret Emmerdale Audition Revealed – and It’s Blowing Fans’ Minds

So, here’s something that absolutely blew my mind when I came across it – did you know that Vicky McClure, the powerhouse actress we all know and love from Line of Duty , once came this close to joining Emmerdale ? I know, it sounds surreal, right? But it's true. A secret audition she did years ago has just been unearthed, and fans – myself included – are shocked.

Now, let’s just take a second to appreciate the career Vicky McClure has carved out. From her breakthrough role as Lol in This Is England back in 2006, she’s just gone from strength to strength. We’ve watched her completely own the screen as DI Kate Fleming in Line of Duty for over a decade. Then she switched it up as a bomb disposal expert in Tipping Point – talk about range. And somewhere in between all that, she even had a role in a Madonna-directed film, Filth and Wisdom . Basically, she’s unstoppable.

But apparently, her path could’ve looked really different. In 2021, Lee Salisbury – the director who handled her soap audition and host of the Soap from the Box podcast – dropped a major throwback on Instagram: a screenshot of her screentest for Emmerdale . The role she auditioned for remains a mystery, but what’s clear is that she was seriously considering joining the soap’s cast.

Vicky herself has since opened up about it. On the Two Shot podcast, she admitted, “I was very close to being in Emmerdale at one point and was very up for it. I was like, ‘It’s only down the road and I get to act’ – that’s all I wanted to do.” And honestly, that’s such a relatable take. For any actor starting out, the chance to work regularly, especially so close to home, must be incredibly tempting.

But here’s where it gets even more interesting. She said, deep down, she knew it wasn’t the kind of show she truly wanted to be part of. She had other ambitions, and clearly, her instincts were right. Still, she made it very clear that her respect for soap actors runs deep. She pointed out how demanding those roles are, how quickly they shoot, how intense the storylines can be – one day you're involved in a murder, the next there's a massive explosion, and then suddenly you’re giving birth. “Your head must be fried,” she said, half-joking, half-in awe. And honestly, I get it – that kind of pace requires serious talent.

It's wild to imagine Vicky walking the streets of Emmerdale village instead of chasing bent coppers in Line of Duty . But maybe this just shows how unpredictable and fascinating an actor’s journey can be. She didn’t go down the soap route in the end, but just knowing that she considered it gives us a glimpse into her early hustle – and reminds us that behind every big star, there’s a series of “almosts” that could’ve changed everything.
