Blue Jays Land Seranthony Dominguez in Bold Bullpen Upgrade

So, here’s a bit of breaking news that caught some folks off guard this afternoon—right in between games of a doubleheader, the Toronto Blue Jays made a move to bolster their bullpen by acquiring right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles. And yep, this happened while the two teams are literally facing each other in a four-game series.

Dominguez, who’s 30 now, has been traded in exchange for the Jays’ pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown. It’s a pretty noteworthy trade considering the timing, the divisional rivalry, and what it signals about Toronto’s mindset going into the final stretch of the season. Dominguez didn’t pitch in game one of today’s doubleheader—and it’s still unclear whether he’ll be suiting up in Blue Jays gear for game two—but the Jays are definitely hoping he’ll be a high-leverage weapon in the days ahead.

Dominguez has had a solid year for the O’s. He’s posted a 3.24 ERA over 41.2 innings, with 54 strikeouts and 24 walks. That walk rate is a bit of a concern, but the guy brings serious heat—averaging close to 98 mph on his fastball—and has one of the top whiff rates in the league. He’s picked up 13 holds and two saves, and even though he’s had some command issues, his ability to miss bats and thrive in tight situations has kept him valuable in the bullpen hierarchy.

This isn’t his first stop in the big leagues either. Dominguez originally came up with the Phillies and was traded to Baltimore last season. Altogether, he’s made 298 major league appearances, racking up 40 saves and 71 holds, so he’s definitely no stranger to pressure-packed innings.

On the other side of the deal, the Orioles are getting Juaron Watts-Brown, a promising right-hander who was the Jays’ third-round pick in the 2023 draft out of Oklahoma State. He was ranked Toronto’s No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline and had been pitching at Double-A New Hampshire before the trade.

For Toronto, this move isn’t just about today—it’s part of a larger effort to stay on top of the AL East and gear up for what they hope will be a deep postseason run. Even after adding Dominguez, they’re reportedly still eyeing more bullpen help and possibly even a big bat or rotation upgrade before the deadline. This trade shows they’re serious.

And hey, for Dominguez—going from one AL East contender to another in the middle of a doubleheader? That’s one way to stay busy on a Tuesday.
