British Gas to Cut Energy Bills to £0 in New Home Trial
So, here’s something that could really shake things up in the UK energy and housing markets—British Gas has just announced a pretty revolutionary move. They’ve teamed up with Barratt Redrow, the UK's biggest housebuilder, to give a handful of new homeowners completely free energy bills for two whole years. Yeah, you heard that right—£0 energy bills.

This is all happening as part of a new trial at a development in Lincolnshire, specifically at a place called Pastures Place in Corby Glen. Ten homes are being included in this first-of-its-kind initiative. And for those lucky households, it could mean savings of about £1,258 a year—or roughly £105 per month—just from not having to pay for gas or electricity. Of course, how much each family actually saves will depend on things like how big their house is, how many people live there, and how much energy they use.
Now, this isn't just some feel-good promo stunt. It's actually being looked at as a real blueprint for the future. If the trial works out—and all signs are pointing in a positive direction—it could be the start of a much bigger rollout. And with energy prices still sitting higher than they used to be, this could not only save people money but also change the way homes are built and powered moving forward.
Oliver Novakovic, who’s the Head of Technical & Innovation at Barratt Redrow, explained that this project builds on earlier work they did with the University of Salford, where they had built prototype "concept homes." The difference now? These are real homes, with real people living in them, experiencing the benefits day to day. These houses are designed to be super energy-efficient and low-carbon, using top-tier insulation and advanced heating systems so homeowners can stay comfortable without racking up huge bills.
On the tech side, British Gas is bringing in its smart home brand, Hive, to help run the homes more efficiently. Hamish Phillips from Centrica, the parent company of British Gas and Hive, pointed out that smart technology can do more than just automate your lights and thermostat—it can help households live more sustainably while also giving them better control over their energy use.
In the end, it’s a win-win. If it all goes as planned, people save money, live greener, and maybe even start expecting this kind of smart, cost-efficient design in all new homes. This partnership might just be a sneak peek at the future of British housing—and energy.
