Delta Flight Hit by Severe Turbulence, Forced to Make Emergency Landing
So, there’s been quite a dramatic incident involving a Delta flight recently. This happened on a flight that was originally headed from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam — Delta Flight 56. About midway through the journey, somewhere over Wyoming, the plane encountered what was described as "significant turbulence." It was so intense that the crew decided to divert the flight and make an emergency landing in Minneapolis.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A330-900, and it was carrying 275 passengers along with 13 crew members. Once the turbulence hit, things got pretty rough. According to reports, 25 people ended up needing medical attention — that includes both passengers and crew. They were taken to local hospitals for evaluation. Thankfully, by the next morning, all seven of the crew members who were hospitalized had already been treated and released. And among the passengers who shared updates with Delta, they had also been discharged and were reportedly doing okay.

One passenger described the experience as "significant turbulence" — and that really seems to sum it up. Imagine sitting on a long-haul flight, possibly mid-meal or trying to get some rest, and suddenly the entire plane starts jolting violently. It must have been terrifying in the moment.
As soon as the plane landed safely at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, emergency responders and medical personnel were already on standby, ready to assist anyone who needed help. Delta quickly activated their Care Team — that’s their specialized group who supports passengers during unexpected travel disruptions. They reached out to affected customers directly, helped them get medical care if needed, and made arrangements for onward travel.
Delta has also confirmed that they’re cooperating fully with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating what exactly happened during the flight. In the meantime, to make sure passengers could still complete their trip, Delta organized a special flight later that day to carry them on to Amsterdam.
This whole situation really highlights how unpredictable air travel can be, even on modern, well-equipped aircraft. While turbulence is a normal part of flying, this incident was clearly more severe than usual. Thankfully, the flight crew responded quickly, the emergency landing was handled safely, and everyone affected is now recovering.
