Dexter Returns from the Dead — Again — and We Can’t Look Away
So, here we are again, talking about Dexter Morgan—TV’s most beloved serial killer. Just when we thought the story had ended for good, he’s back. Dexter: Resurrection is hitting screens this week, and somehow, improbably, this character that was killed off (again) in New Blood has been revived. Shot dead by his own son? Nah. Turns out it was just a “flesh wound.” Michael C. Hall, cool and collected as ever, admits it was his idea to bring Dexter back. And, strangely, it works.

You’d think bringing someone back from the dead—again—would be a creative disaster, but Resurrection leans into the absurdity and ends up making it... fun. Michael C. Hall says, “What if he didn’t die?” and suddenly, we’re off to the races. The old charm is back: voiceovers full of dark wit, disturbing dismemberments, and a twisted moral code that has always been weirdly satisfying to watch. And yes, the show's back with more than just nostalgia—big names are joining the cast like Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, and Neil Patrick Harris, all playing their own brand of villain.
Now, there’s a murder convention . You heard that right—Dexter stumbles into what sounds like an international killer conference in New York. These new villains are eccentric, creepy, and definitely built for a long-term run. It’s chaotic, packed with callbacks, but somehow, the chaos is part of the appeal.
And Michael C. Hall? He’s shockingly open about it all. He admits Dexter is therapeutic for him. Playing this ethically unbound character, someone who dishes out vigilante justice and navigates unimaginable darkness, actually helps him stay grounded. “Maybe I’m a healthier person for having done all this,” he says, and you kind of believe him.
Then there’s Dexter: Original Sin , the prequel that aired last year, where Hall voiced over the younger version of himself, played by Patrick Gibson. Seeing someone else play Dexter, he says, was “weird”—and he had to remind himself not to impersonate Gibson when returning to the role.
There’s a growing Dexterverse now: spin-offs, prequels, new seasons in the pipeline. Hall jokes that whether or not he continues, Dexter will still be the first line in his obituary. He’s come to terms with that. “I feel lucky to have gotten away with this,” he says. And let’s be honest—so do we.
Dexter: Resurrection premieres on Paramount+ July 11. The dark comedy, the tension, the strange satisfaction of seeing justice delivered by someone entirely unqualified to give it—somehow, it still works. And if this season is anything to go by, Dexter Morgan isn’t going anywhere. Again.
