Farewell to Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince' After Two Decades of Silent Struggle

Today, the world pauses to remember Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud — a royal figure whose life, though largely lived in silence, left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Known affectionately and symbolically as "The Sleeping Prince," Alwaleed passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 36, following a nearly 20-year coma that began after a devastating car accident in London in 2005.

Prince Alwaleed was just 15 years old when tragedy struck. While studying at a military college in the United Kingdom, he was involved in a serious crash that left him with severe brain injuries and internal bleeding. After initial treatment abroad, he was flown back to Saudi Arabia and admitted to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. There, he remained on life support — unconscious but deeply loved — for two decades.

Over the years, the public watched with compassion and quiet hope. Occasional videos would surface showing slight movements — a twitch of the hand, a flutter of fingers — fueling belief that recovery, however unlikely, was still within the realm of possibility. His room became more than a medical ward; it became a space of prayer and perseverance.

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, became a symbol of unwavering devotion. Refusing to remove life support despite medical advice, Prince Khaled often said that life and death are matters only Allah can decide. His steadfastness, rooted in faith and paternal love, resonated with people far beyond the royal family. Through years of Ramadan nights, Eid gatherings, and moments of solitude, he prayed — never losing hope.

The news of Prince Alwaleed’s passing was shared by both the Royal Court and the Global Imams Council, with condolences pouring in from across the Arab world. In a heartfelt statement, Prince Khaled wrote, “With hearts full of faith in Allah’s decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son… may Allah have mercy on him.”

Born in April 1990, Prince Alwaleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled and nephew to billionaire businessman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. He was poised for a future in military service — a life of duty and promise — but instead, his name became a symbol of hope, spiritual endurance, and the unbreakable bond between a parent and child.

Funeral prayers for the Prince will be held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh after Asr prayer on July 20. His passing marks the end of a 20-year chapter defined not by action, but by quiet resilience — a journey shared by a nation and watched by the world.

Today, we remember not just a prince, but a story — of hope against all odds, of love that never gave up, and of a father who believed in miracles until the very end. Rest in peace, Sleeping Prince.
