Federal Judge Strikes Down Trump-Era Lawsuit Over Sanctuary Cities
Hey, have you heard the latest about the Trump administration’s legal battles over sanctuary cities? Well, a pretty significant development just happened—especially for Chicago and the state of Illinois. A federal judge has officially tossed out a lawsuit brought by the Trump administration that challenged the legality of sanctuary city policies in Chicago.
So, here’s the deal. Back in February, Trump’s Department of Justice filed a lawsuit claiming that laws in Illinois and Chicago were interfering with federal immigration enforcement. Basically, they were arguing that local officials were not cooperating enough with federal immigration agents, which, they said, went against the U.S. Constitution’s Supremacy Clause under the Tenth Amendment. That clause generally says that federal law trumps state law if there’s a conflict—but it’s not always that simple.

Fast forward to now—Judge Lindsay Jenkins, who was appointed by President Biden, dismissed the case. She ruled that the policies in question are actually protected by the Constitution. According to her, the federal government cannot force states or cities to participate in federal immigration enforcement. Doing so, she said, would be like trying to “commandeer” local governments, which is exactly what the Tenth Amendment prohibits.
The specific policies at the heart of the case? Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance and Illinois’ TRUST Act. Both laws limit the extent to which local police and city agencies can help federal immigration authorities. For example, they restrict sharing personal information or holding someone longer just because ICE asked them to. These laws have been in place since 2012 and 2017, respectively.
Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago was pretty pleased with the decision. He stated that this ruling confirms what the city has always believed: their sanctuary laws are not only legal but also crucial for public safety. The idea is that when immigrant communities trust local police and city services, everyone benefits because people are more likely to report crimes or seek help without fear of deportation.
Now, while this is a win for Illinois, the Trump team isn’t giving up. The administration is still pushing lawsuits in other cities like New York and Los Angeles, and they’re doubling down on immigration enforcement. In fact, just before this ruling, they filed another lawsuit against New York City.
So yeah, the broader fight over immigration and sanctuary cities is far from over—but for now, Chicago and Illinois have scored a major legal victory.
