Fitzpatrick, McIlroy, and Drama Light Up The Open 2025 at Royal Portrush

The Open Championship is back at Royal Portrush, and what a stunning start we’ve had to the 153rd edition of golf’s oldest major. Day one brought everything: drama, cheers, heartbreak, and that irresistible Northern Irish wind that seems to have a personality of its own. But the name grabbing headlines early is Matt Fitzpatrick. With an electric round of 67, including three birdies and a sensational eagle, the 2022 US Open champion has surged into a share of the lead. That score puts him at four-under alongside Haotong Li and Denmark’s JS Olesen—two players who also showed they have plenty of firepower in their bags.

And how about Rory McIlroy? Back on home turf, the galleries were ten-deep just to get a glimpse of him teeing off. The energy was electric. But nerves seemed to follow Rory early on—just like they did in 2019 when he began with that gut-wrenching quadruple bogey. This time, his opening shot also went left into the rough, but he managed to avoid disaster. After a bogey on the first, he clawed his way back with birdies, including a stunning putt at the fifth that sent the crowd into a frenzy. And here's the crazy stat: for the first time ever at an Open held at Portrush, Rory is under par. That took him 41 holes to achieve.

Elsewhere, Scottie Scheffler reminded us why he's the world number one. Despite battling a wayward driver, he kept grinding and posted a solid 68. His putting touch at the end—just missing a trio of birdies to close—was pure class. If he finds the fairways in round two, the rest of the field better watch out.

Tommy Fleetwood, meanwhile, had a rough go of it—literally. A frustrating trip through the bunkers and a hot mic moment reminded us that even the calmest players can get rattled on links courses. His reaction—less "golf clap" and more "golf expletive"—said it all.

And who could ignore Christiaan Bezuidenhout’s amazing backstory? After being banned from the Amateur Championship here years ago due to medication for anxiety caused by childhood poisoning, he’s back—sitting pretty at three-under after a string of birdies. That’s resilience personified.

Weather, of course, played its part. Royal Portrush threw a bit of everything at the players—sun, wind, whispers of rain, even warnings of thunderstorms. One minute it was short sleeves and sunglasses, the next it was hold-your-hat-and-hope-for-par.

From eagle chips to Sergio Garcia nostalgia, Bryson’s battles in the swales, and Viktor Hovland’s laser-focused start, the leaderboard is already a colorful mix of youth, grit, and seasoned determination. And we’re just getting started.

The leaderboard is tight, the course is demanding, and the stories are already writing themselves. If round one is anything to go by, The Open 2025 is going to be one for the ages.
