Flamengo Bounces Back with Narrow Win Over Atlético-MG at Maracanã
What a night it was at the Maracanã! In the 17th round of the 2025 Brasileirão Série A, Flamengo edged out Atlético Mineiro with a tight 1-0 victory in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The game kicked off with a high tempo, as both teams showed early signs that they came to win. Right from the first whistle, chances were created on both sides, but the first half saw plenty of fouls, yellow cards, and wasted opportunities. Atlético-MG came close a few times—especially with shots from Gustavo Scarpa and Hulk—but Agustín Rossi, Flamengo’s keeper, was up to the challenge, pulling off some important saves.
Flamengo responded with pace on the flanks, using Bruno Henrique and Gonzalo Plata to stretch Atlético’s defense. One of the most critical moments in the first half came at the 37th minute when Gonzalo Plata was brought down inside the box. A penalty was awarded after a quick VAR check, but Flamengo failed to convert the opportunity, leaving the score locked at 0-0 heading into the break.

The second half brought new energy and several substitutions, with both managers trying to shake things up. Flamengo, especially, showed more aggression, and their pressure eventually paid off in the 30th minute. From a well-delivered set-piece, defender Léo Ortiz rose highest to nod the ball into the net—giving Flamengo a 1-0 lead in front of their home crowd.
After the goal, Atlético-MG pushed hard for an equalizer. Hulk and Bernard came on to add more firepower, and a series of corners and dangerous crosses kept the Flamengo defense busy. But Flamengo's backline held firm, especially with Leo Pereira and Ortiz clearing out everything that came their way.
As time ticked down, the match grew more physical. Players on both sides picked up yellow cards, and fouls became frequent. The referee had his hands full keeping the match under control. Despite all of Atlético’s late efforts—including a few threatening headers from Igor Rabello and Rony—they couldn’t find a way past Rossi.
When the final whistle blew, the Maracanã erupted. It wasn’t the most polished performance from Flamengo, but it was gritty, determined, and ultimately effective. That single goal from Léo Ortiz sealed all three points, giving Flamengo a valuable win and a confidence boost as they look to climb the table.
For Atlético-MG, the loss was a tough pill to swallow, especially given how evenly matched the contest had been. But they’ll have to regroup quickly—with more big matches ahead, there’s little time to dwell on what might have been.
