Nolan Arenado Could Be Surprise Trade Chip at 2025 Deadline

So, here’s something that’s heating up as we get closer to the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline — Nolan Arenado might actually be on the move. Yep, the same Arenado who’s an 8-time All-Star and still one of the best gloves in the game at third base.

Now, Arenado has a full no-trade clause, which means he can block any deal. He already did it once — remember last December when the Cardinals and Astros had a trade lined up? Arenado said “no thanks,” and that was that. But with the deadline coming up fast on July 31st, teams that miss out on other third basemen like Eugenio Suárez could suddenly pivot toward Arenado.

The Cardinals seem open to it this time. Why? A couple of reasons. First, they’ve got younger infielders they want to give playing time to. Second, Arenado’s contract isn’t exactly light — he’s still owed $42 million over the next two seasons. And even though the Rockies are still paying part of his salary from that 2021 trade, St. Louis would probably need to eat some money to make a deal work.

So what would a team be getting with Arenado? Defensively, he’s still elite. He ranks in the 89th percentile in outs above average — in other words, the glove hasn’t gone anywhere. Offensively, though, it’s been a bit of a roller coaster. He started strong, dipped, bounced back in June, and then cooled off again in July. As of now, he's sitting with 10 home runs, 43 RBIs, and a .669 OPS over 93 games. Not vintage Arenado, but he's still producing — just not at the MVP-caliber level we're used to.

Some contenders like the Yankees and Astros may be out of the running already. The Yankees already picked up Ryan McMahon from the Rockies, and Houston, even with a hole at third base after Paredes’ injury, doesn’t seem ready to take another swing at Arenado. But other teams still in the mix for Suárez — like the Cubs, Brewers, or Phillies — might decide Arenado is the next best option if they strike out on their Plan A.

It’s going to come down to how aggressive St. Louis wants to be in reshaping their roster and whether Arenado is finally willing to say yes to a new destination. Keep an eye on this — it could be one of those Deadline Day shockers if it actually happens.
