Fresh Heartbreak for Simon Gregson as Wife Closes Beloved Tearoom Amid Financial Struggles
So, there’s been another difficult turn in the life of Coronation Street star Simon Gregson — one that’s both personal and professional. Simon, who’s been playing Steve McDonald on the cobbles since 1989, is now facing a fresh emotional blow as his wife Emma has had to shut down her cherished business, Morley Tearooms, due to ongoing financial complications.
Emma, who has been running the tearooms for the past two and a half years, shared the news with her followers on social media. The little café in Wilmslow had built up a loyal customer base, not just for the delicious home-cooked food — especially her famous Victoria sponge — but for the warm, community vibe Emma created. She wasn’t just serving tea and cakes; she was building a family of regulars who came not only for the food, but for the friendly chats and genuine hospitality.

But now, it’s all come to an unexpected end. Emma revealed that the lease agreement for the venue no longer suited her requirements. Although there was a verbal agreement to stay through summer, she was told she had to vacate much earlier than planned, with her last day of trading being June 29. The suddenness of the closure clearly came as a shock not just to Emma, but to her customers too. Many have taken to social media to show their support, even telling her they'd follow her sponge cake “anywhere.”
Despite the heartache, Emma has made it clear this isn’t the end — just a transition. She hinted at a new venture already in the works, saying, “End of Morley Tearooms but the beginning of something even better. When we move, we move together.” There’s even a book of names she’s been collecting from loyal customers who want to be part of her next chapter.
This comes at a tough time for Simon too. Earlier this year, his production company went into liquidation, leaving him with serious financial liabilities — including a £165,000 debt to the tax office. Reports claim liquidators are chasing Simon for over £250,000 that was allegedly transferred from company accounts into a separate personal account. The whole ordeal even raised concerns about the possibility of Simon losing his home.
Despite all of this, Simon is still doing what he can to bring in income — including offering personalized video messages on Cameo for £37.50 per message. It’s a side hustle many celebrities are turning to, but it does highlight the financial pressure he’s under right now.
Through it all, one thing remains clear: the Gregsons are doing their best to stay positive and look toward the future. Emma’s optimism and the outpouring of support from her community are reminders that even when one door closes, another may very well be just around the corner.
Stay tuned — because if Emma’s next venture is anything like her tearoom, it’s going to be something special.
