Today, as the full moon of Ashadha graces the sky, we come together to celebrate Guru Purnima 2025 —a festival that transcends religion, profession, or background. It's not just another day on the calendar; it’s a spiritual pause, a reminder of the immense value of wisdom, mentorship, and guidance in our lives.
Let’s reflect for a moment—who has shaped us, guided us, held our hand during our most uncertain steps? Be it a mother’s nurturing touch, a teacher’s lessons, a spiritual master’s insights, or even a friend’s unwavering belief—our journey has been lit by many such lamps. The word guru comes from Sanskrit: gu meaning darkness and ru meaning remover. So, a guru is one who dispels darkness. And in Jainism, it honours the first disciple of Lord Mahavira. That alone shows how deeply rooted and universal this observance is.
But beyond its historical roots, Guru Purnima serves as a contemporary call to action. In a time where we are inundated with information but starved for wisdom, where mentors are rare and role models even rarer, this day nudges us to seek out genuine guidance. To remember the importance of ethics, values, and character in a world chasing speed and success.
A beautiful verse by the saint Kabir compares the guru to a potter—moulding the disciple like clay with love inside and firmness outside. “Guru kumhar shish kumbh hai, garhi garhi kadhe khot / Antar hath sahar de, bahar mare chot.” The outer discipline may seem harsh, but it’s always backed by inner support and care. That’s the true essence of a guru: someone who doesn’t just instruct, but elevates.
Throughout Indian history, such relationships have built empires, movements, and legacies—Guru Ramdas and Shivaji Maharaj, Swami Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, or Mahavatar Babaji and his divine lineage.
