Hamilton’s Momentum Meets Ottawa’s Urgency in CFL Week 6 Showdown
As we head into Week 6 of the CFL season, all eyes turn to Hamilton, where the Tiger-Cats will host the Ottawa REDBLACKS in a pivotal East Division clash. This game isn't just about standings—it's a collision of momentum versus desperation, experience versus resurgence, and raw talent versus redemption.
Let’s start with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. After a rocky 0-2 start, the Ticats have bounced back impressively with two straight wins. They now sit just two points behind the East-leading Montreal Alouettes. And leading the charge? Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and wide receiver Kenny Lawler, a duo that’s been nothing short of electric. Mitchell leads the league in touchdown passes with nine and is second in yardage. Lawler, meanwhile, tops the CFL with 483 receiving yards and is coming off a monstrous three-touchdown game against Toronto. The chemistry between those two is lethal, and Ottawa’s secondary will have its hands full trying to contain them.

But Hamilton knows they need to tighten up defensively. They allowed 25 second-half points last week—a worrying trend that’s seen them give up 73 in the second halves over just four games. That’s simply not sustainable. The return of linebacker Reggie Stubblefield, after 400 days away from the game due to an ACL injury, is one of the most emotional storylines this week. He’s battled his way back, and now he’s stepping into a key starting role. Head coach Scott Milanovich expects him to bring not just effort, but energy—something this defense desperately needs down the stretch of games.
On the flip side, Ottawa enters Saturday’s game with just one win, but quarterback Dru Brown has been nothing short of spectacular. Despite the team’s struggles, Brown has thrown for 729 yards and four touchdowns in just two starts, completing over 77% of his passes. He’s coming off a 316-yard, two-touchdown performance against Edmonton, and with Hamilton’s secondary vulnerable to the pass, Brown could be poised for another big outing.
Receiver Kalil Pimpleton is another name to watch. He’s been a dual-threat weapon, racking up 203 receiving yards and a dazzling 97-yard punt return touchdown last week. With Bralon Addison out, Pimpleton’s role becomes even more critical. Ottawa’s offense lives and dies with explosive plays, and he’s their best bet to deliver.
Defensively, the REDBLACKS have been surprisingly soft against the run, and Hamilton—although currently ranked seventh in rushing—will look to exploit that. Players like Johnny Augustine and Ante Milanovic-Litre have a chance to get going on the ground if Ottawa can’t shore up the trenches. That’s where Lorenzo Mauldin IV and Cleyon Laing need to assert themselves and allow linebackers Jovan Santos-Knox and Adarius Pickett to clean up.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET at Hamilton Stadium. For Ottawa, it’s a chance to claw their way back into relevance. For Hamilton, it’s an opportunity to keep pace at the top of the division and solidify their identity. Whatever happens, this matchup promises fireworks, emotion, and no shortage of storylines. Don’t miss it.
