HBO Confirms The Last of Us Season 3 Coming in 2027

Alright, if you're a fan of The Last of Us like I am, buckle up — because we've just received some official news from HBO. Season 3 of the critically acclaimed series The Last of Us has been confirmed, and it's set to arrive in 2027. Yeah, I know — that's a long wait. But at least now, we’ve got something to mark on the calendar.

The announcement came straight from HBO’s CEO, Casey Bloys, during a conversation with Variety , where he shared that the third season is “definitely planned for 2027.” While he didn’t offer an exact release date, the estimate makes sense when you consider the two-year gap between the first and second seasons. So, sometime in the first half of 2027 seems likely.

The Last of Us Part II , and let’s just say things are about to get even more intense.

One thing that stood out in the update is that Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of the original game and a driving force behind the show, won’t be returning for season three. He’s stepping back to focus fully on his role at Naughty Dog, the game studio behind The Last of Us . HBO seems unfazed by this though, with Bloys expressing full confidence in showrunner Craig Mazin. According to him, Druckmann already left behind a solid blueprint, and Mazin is more than capable of steering the ship.

What’s still unclear is whether HBO will wrap up the rest of the game’s story in just one more season or stretch it out over multiple. That decision is being left entirely up to Mazin, which honestly feels like the right move. Given how nuanced and emotionally complex Part II is, there's definitely room for more than just one season if they want to do it justice.

In the meantime, if you’re looking to revisit the world of Ellie and Abby, there’s something cool on the gaming front. Naughty Dog recently released a new Chronological Mode for the remastered version of The Last of Us Part II . It reorganizes the game’s story so you can play it straight through, in order, without the flashbacks — a great way to refresh your memory before the next season drops.

So yeah, 2027 feels far off, but with the story and production quality we've seen so far, it's safe to say the wait will be worth it.
