Heartbreak in Somerset: School Trip Turns Tragic in Coach Crash Near Minehead
Earlier today, a tragic and deeply distressing incident unfolded in the quiet countryside of Exmoor, Somerset. A coach carrying between 60 to 70 students from Minehead Middle School was involved in a serious crash around 3:00 PM BST while returning from a school trip to Exmoor Zoo. The accident occurred on the A396 Cutcombe Hill near Wheddon Cross—just a few miles from the school.
As the news broke, emergency services from across the South West rushed to the scene. Avon and Somerset Police quickly declared it a major incident. Firefighters worked urgently to free passengers still trapped in the vehicle, while multiple ambulances, including air ambulances, began transporting casualties to hospitals. Some of the more seriously injured were taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary, home to a major trauma center.
Most of the children were safely evacuated and taken to a temporary rest centre set up at a nearby pub in Wheddon Cross. In an effort to reunite families, police directed parents to Minehead Middle School, where officers were already present to assist. The atmosphere was understandably heavy—parents visibly distressed, some in tears, all desperate for updates on their children.

The bus involved belongs to Ridlers, a local coach company. Peter Prior-Sankey, the director, released a heartfelt statement expressing the company’s deep concern. He confirmed the vehicle was returning from a daytrip and assured that Ridlers is cooperating fully with emergency services to understand what led to this devastating crash. He added, “Our hearts go out to the school pupils and our driver. We are doing everything possible to support the investigation and those affected.”
Beacon Education, the trust that oversees Minehead Middle School, also issued a statement emphasizing their focus on supporting pupils, families, and staff during this incredibly difficult time. They acknowledged the emotional toll and asked for patience while they continue to work closely with the authorities.
Leaders across the UK have expressed their sorrow. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said she was “shocked and saddened,” and praised the emergency response teams for their rapid action. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed she is receiving regular updates and sent her thoughts to all those involved.
The A396 remains closed and the public is being urged to stay away from the area to allow emergency services to continue their work without obstruction. Meanwhile, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
