Is Another UK Heatwave on the Way or Will August Bring More Rain?
So, if you're wondering what on earth is going on with the UK’s summer weather right now, you're definitely not alone. We kicked off the season with plenty of sunshine and even saw three heatwaves already—one of which brought sizzling highs of 35.8°C in Kent on July 1st. But since then, it feels like we’ve done a complete 180. The past week or so has been all about rain—some of the heaviest of the summer, in fact—with flash floods in places like Northern Ireland and eastern England. There was even a mini tornado reported in County Durham!
This sudden change wasn’t totally unexpected in meteorological terms. Weather patterns often shift dramatically after a few weeks of one dominant type, and that’s exactly what’s happened here. The jet stream has shifted south, bringing areas of low pressure and cooler, wetter air over the UK. So while school holidays are in full swing, the great British summer has been giving more soggy park days than sun-soaked beach trips.

Now the big question: is there still a chance for another heatwave?
Well, the short answer is... maybe, but don’t get your hopes up just yet. Over the next few days, high pressure from the Azores is expected to nudge its way in. That could mean fewer showers and more settled conditions—particularly in southern and western parts of the UK. Temperatures might climb to 28°C in the southeast on Friday, which is above average but still doesn’t qualify as a full-on heatwave.
Looking ahead into August, things remain a bit up in the air. The Met Office and BBC Weather are both suggesting that the start of the month will likely be breezy and mixed, especially in the north and west. There’ll be rain at times, but also drier and sunnier breaks—mainly across the south and east.
That said, there's a growing chance that as we head deeper into August, high pressure could take a stronger hold. If that happens, and if we start to see southerly or easterly winds developing, there could be a return of very warm, possibly even hot, weather. Some long-range models even hint at temperatures reaching around 30–31°C again in parts of the southeast and East of England by early to mid-August.
But—and this is important—long-range forecasts are notoriously fickle in the UK. So while a late-summer heatwave isn’t off the table, it’s far from a sure thing. For now, it looks like we’ll be dancing between showers, cloud, and the occasional warm spell. So don’t put away your umbrella—or your sunscreen—just yet.
