Jinhae Goes All Out to Prevent Flood Damage from Torrential Rain
Hey everyone, I want to talk about something important that's happening right now in Jinhae-gu, a district in Changwon Special City, South Korea. With the recent torrential rain and a heavy rain warning issued, local authorities are in full emergency mode to prevent any major damage, and their efforts really show how serious and prepared they are.
On July 13, the district government started intensive inspections across 40 vulnerable areas—including landslide-prone slopes, valleys, and steep hillsides. They weren’t just looking around—they acted fast. In places where soil was already sliding due to the rain, sandbags were placed immediately. Any gravel spilling from construction sites onto roads was quickly cleared to minimize traffic disruption.

One smart move that really stood out was their proactive use of a pre-made “storm drain cover map” for each neighborhood. Based on this map, workers removed covers from street drains near residential areas to ensure that rainwater could flow away quickly without pooling or causing flash floods. This was especially crucial around the traditional markets, where flooding could easily damage property and affect local businesses.
But their efforts didn’t stop there. On July 14, city workers and local offices joined forces to clean out leaves and trash that had accumulated in storm drains and ditches. These blockages might seem small, but in a downpour, they can become major hazards. By clearing them, the city not only prepared for more rain but also reassured the community that they were doing everything possible to stay ahead of the weather.
The head of Jinhae-gu District Office, Jeong Hyun-seop, emphasized that minimizing damage through early monitoring and swift responses was their top priority. He promised to address every vulnerable spot identified during the inspection, reinforcing those areas to prevent any future damage from similar storms.
This whole situation reminds us how critical local government action can be in times of unpredictable climate events. We often take it for granted, but these behind-the-scenes efforts—removing drain covers, placing sandbags, clearing debris—can be the difference between a safe neighborhood and a flooded disaster zone.
So, while the rain might not be over yet, it’s comforting to know that places like Jinhae-gu are setting a strong example of preparedness, responsibility, and quick action. Let’s all stay safe out there and be mindful of the work being done around us to keep our communities protected.
