John Torode Breaks Silence on Racist Language Allegation from MasterChef Report

So, some pretty surprising news has come out recently about MasterChef presenter John Torode. If you've followed the show, you know he's been a central figure on it for about two decades now—one half of the iconic judging duo with Gregg Wallace. But this time, Torode has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, as he’s been named in a formal investigation report for allegedly using racist language years ago.

Torode came forward publicly on Instagram to confirm that he is, in fact, the person referenced in the investigation, which originally focused on his former co-host Gregg Wallace. The report, commissioned by MasterChef’s production company Banijay and conducted by law firm Lewis Silkin, mainly looked into Wallace’s behavior—where 45 out of 83 allegations were upheld, many involving inappropriate language and conduct. But it also confirmed two additional allegations involving other individuals. And Torode says he is one of them.

Now here’s where it gets complicated. The incident allegedly occurred back in 2018 or 2019 during what was described as a social situation. According to Torode, the person involved at the time didn’t believe the language was used maliciously, and Torode reportedly apologized immediately. Despite that, he says he has "absolutely no recollection" of it and firmly stated that he does not believe it happened at all.

Still, in his statement, Torode was quick to make it clear that he finds any form of racial language totally unacceptable. He expressed that he was shocked and saddened by the allegation and emphasized that he would never intentionally offend anyone.

This comes at a time when the entire UK television industry is under intense scrutiny. Wallace’s dismissal from the show and the scope of allegations in the report have already sparked a broader conversation about behavior in the workplace—especially in creative industries. Even Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has commented, calling the findings "horrendous and appalling" and highlighting the need for real change.

What’s interesting here is that Torode wasn’t accused of repeated behavior—just a single moment, which he says he can't even recall. It’s not uncommon for people in the public eye to face scrutiny for past actions, especially in this climate where accountability is more important than ever. But it also brings up difficult questions about memory, context, and intent—particularly when the alleged incident happened several years ago and was reportedly addressed in the moment.

Still, Torode’s name now appears in a serious and highly public report. Whether or not it affects his career long-term is yet to be seen, but for now, he's choosing transparency and reiterating his personal stance against racism.

It’s a reminder of just how high the standards are for public figures—and why it's so important to create and maintain respectful environments, no matter the setting.
