Justice at Last for Matthew Daulby, Two Years After His Tragic Death

Two years ago, on what should have been just another night out in Ormskirk, Lancashire, a young man's life was tragically and senselessly taken. Nineteen-year-old Matthew Daulby, from Liverpool, was stabbed and killed in the early hours of July 29, 2023, after a violent clash between two groups outside a bar. What followed was a painful journey for his grieving family—one that only recently reached a form of closure.

Matthew’s killer, 21-year-old Thomas Dures, had been on the run for 18 months. After the stabbing, he fled the UK, traveling through several countries before eventually handing himself in at a police station in Greece. Just this past week, Dures was convicted of murder at Preston Crown Court and sentenced to life in prison, serving a minimum of 23 years.

Throughout the trial and sentencing, Matthew’s parents, Angela and Gary Daulby, spoke with heartbreaking honesty. In a statement read aloud in court, Angela called Dures a “coward who carried a knife,” emphasizing how his choice to flee justice only deepened their family’s trauma. She described how they were forced into the public eye—pleading on television for Dures to be found—at a time when all they wanted was to grieve in peace. She told Dures directly, “You have never shown any remorse or even acceptance that you murdered the most precious thing in our lives.”

Her words painted a devastating picture of what it’s been like for the Daulbys: watching security footage of their son being killed, enduring trial delays, and suffering the everyday void of Matthew's absence. She said the trial’s conclusion marked the end of a long and difficult chapter in the justice system, but the loss of their son is a wound that will never fully heal.

Speaking outside court, Gary Daulby echoed his wife’s pain but also expressed a quiet strength: “Matthew will be missed every day for the rest of our lives. His loss cannot be measured in a few words.” He then left everyone with a powerful message—words that were Matthew’s own: “Choose life, not a knife.”

The story is more than a court case or a headline. It’s a tragic reminder of the lasting pain violence leaves behind, and a plea from one family that no one else should have to endure what they did.
