Luis Díaz Leaves Liverpool for Bayern in Emotional £65.5m Transfer
Luis Díaz has officially completed a £65.5 million move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich, bringing his three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield to an emotional end. The Colombian winger signed a four-year deal with the Bundesliga champions, marking one of the biggest transfer moves of the summer—and one of the most significant sales in Liverpool’s history, just behind Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez.
Now 28 years old, Díaz had been a central figure in Liverpool’s recent success, playing a key role in last season’s Premier League title win and scoring 17 goals in all competitions—his most prolific season to date. But after rejecting an earlier £58.6m bid, Liverpool eventually accepted Bayern’s improved offer over the weekend, and Díaz was given the green light to undergo a medical and complete the deal.

He didn’t feature in Liverpool’s recent pre-season match against AC Milan, a clear indication that the move was imminent. And now that it's done, Díaz has said goodbye in an emotional statement, posting on Instagram that he feels proud of what he achieved with the club. “I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” he wrote. “Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.”
However, what would have been a celebratory farewell was overshadowed by tragedy. Díaz paid tribute to his teammate Diogo Jota, who recently passed away in a car accident, calling the goodbye "bittersweet" and saying he would never forget him.
Díaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for an initial £37m. Over 148 appearances, he racked up 41 goals and helped bring home the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Premier League title. His departure now brings Liverpool's total player sales this summer to around £115m—a significant sum that could help fund a potential record-breaking move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
From a tactical standpoint, Díaz’s departure opens the door for players like Cody Gakpo and young prospect Rio Ngumoha to step into larger roles. New signings such as Hugo Ekitike may also see time on the left wing, depending on how manager Arne Slot adjusts his forward line.
It’s always tough to say goodbye to a player as impactful and beloved as Luis Díaz. But in his own words, he leaves with his duty fulfilled and his heart still firmly tied to Liverpool.
