Lulu Returns to Her Roots in “To Sir, With Love” Musical
Here’s some exciting theatre news that’s both nostalgic and powerful — Lulu is making a return to the story that helped launch her iconic career. She’ll be starring in To Sir, With Love – A New Musical for two special concert performances, taking place at London’s Gillian Lynne Theatre on Monday, 24 November 2025.

If that title rings a bell, it's because To Sir, With Love was first a well-loved novel by E.R. Braithwaite, then a classic 1967 film starring Sidney Poitier — and yes, a young Lulu was part of that film, even singing the unforgettable title song. Now, decades later, she’s stepping back into the world of this deeply human story, this time on stage in a newly reimagined musical version.
The production is being led by producers Kris Lythgoe and Darren Bell, with direction by acclaimed American director Sheldon Epps. It’s being billed as a concert-style presentation, but don’t let that fool you — there’s a brand-new score involved, composed by John Farrar and Kara DioGuardi, while the legendary title track, To Sir, with Love , written by Mark London and Don Black, will also be part of the experience.
This version revisits the remarkable journey of Rick Braithwaite, a Cambridge-educated engineer and former RAF fighter pilot. In a post-war Britain marked by racial and class-based tension, Braithwaite is assigned to teach in a tough East End London school. Instead of treating his students as lost causes, he sees them as young adults deserving of dignity and responsibility. The story is one of transformation — not just for the students, but for the teacher as well. It’s about respect, resilience, and rising above prejudice, which makes it just as powerful and timely today as it was nearly 60 years ago.
Joining the creative team are music director Kenny Seymour, musical arrangements by Eve Nelson, orchestrations by Joseph Joubert, and choreography by Edgar Godineaux. Casting is being handled by Debbie O’Brien, with further cast announcements expected soon. The musical itself has been developed through the Ogunquit Playhouse New Works Program, a strong sign of the care and development behind the scenes.
For fans of Lulu or anyone drawn to stories that speak to personal growth, societal challenges, and the enduring power of education, this is a must-see — even if only for two nights. It's not just a return to a beloved character for Lulu; it’s a full-circle moment that honors where she started and where she’s still going.
