Man United Fire Blanks in Pre-Season Stalemate Against Leeds United

What a frustrating yet intriguing start to pre-season it was for Manchester United as they took on Leeds United in Stockholm. The game may have ended 0-0, but it was far from uneventful. This clash, held at the Friends Arena, marked Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge and offered a glimpse into what his Red Devils might look like moving forward. However, if there's one thing fans were left wanting, it was goals.

From the very first whistle, United showed intent. Amorim's first-half XI featured a strong lineup including Bruno Fernandes, new signing Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon. United dominated early, registering nine shots and completely shutting out Leeds in terms of attempts. Surprisingly though, they had just 44% of possession during that first period, which shows Amorim is pushing for a more aggressive, front-footed style that doesn’t rely on controlling the ball for long spells.

At halftime, Amorim rang the changes, fielding an entirely different eleven. The attacking mindset stayed the same—10 more shots followed, bringing the tally to 19 by full-time. Young Chido Obi-Martin led the way with five shots, while fullbacks Patrick Dorgu and Leon both chipped in with three each, highlighting the new manager’s desire for attacking wing play. Despite the opportunities, the finishing touch just wasn’t there. Credit must go to Leeds as well, particularly their debutant Ilia Gruev, who anchored midfield well and helped keep United at bay.

Tom Heaton stood out in goal in the second half, making several solid stops to keep Leeds from sneaking a winner. It’s clear the competition for spots is heating up, with youth and experience both given a runout. United fielded 24 players in total, giving Amorim a valuable chance to assess depth ahead of their US tour.

Post-match, Amorim singled out Matheus Cunha for praise, noting, “He showed what we need… but we have to increase our quality in the final third.” And he’s spot on. There was energy, there were ideas, but without goals, it’s hard to win matches—even in pre-season.

The match had a brief hiccup with kickoff delayed by 10 minutes due to Leeds arriving late, but once things got going, the tempo was high. Leeds, under Daniel Farke, were well-organized and dangerous in transition, but didn’t create enough to truly test United over 90 minutes.

This draw may not be the dream start Amorim wanted, but it was a valuable test. With upcoming games against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton in the United States, there’s plenty of time to sharpen up. For now, fans can take heart in the signs of an evolving style—pressing, pace, and a real commitment to getting numbers forward. The finishing? That'll need work. But it’s only just begun.
