Marine Veteran Stops Walmart Stabbing Spree Without Firing a Shot

Over the weekend in Traverse City, Michigan, what started as a normal Saturday afternoon at Walmart quickly turned into a scene of chaos and horror — until a group of brave bystanders, including a former Marine, stepped in and helped save countless lives.

According to authorities, a man named Bradford James Gille entered the Walmart armed with a folding knife and went on a stabbing rampage, injuring 11 people. The victims ranged in age from 29 to 84 years old. In the midst of the panic, customers were seen running for their lives while cries of help echoed through the store. But it was the actions of a few everyday people — including Derrick Perry, a Marine veteran — that helped bring this terrifying situation to an end.

Perry, who was in the parking lot at the time, heard the commotion and immediately sprang into action. Video footage shows him calmly pointing his firearm at the suspect while commanding him to drop the knife — all without firing a single shot. Alongside him were other bystanders who used anything they could find, including shopping carts, to try and subdue the attacker. Two of those heroes, Matthew Kolakowski and Chris O’Brien — brothers-in-law and also former Marines — recounted their terrifying experience, describing the scene inside the store as a “bloodbath” and “pure panic.”

Kolakowski said he didn’t have a weapon on him, so he grabbed a grocery cart and rammed it into Gille with full force. He recalled seeing Gille stabbing a woman and making eye contact with him just moments before striking. At one point, the attacker claimed he was a soldier — to which Kolakowski replied, “Well, I’m a Marine,” before delivering another blow with the cart.

Eventually, Gille was surrounded, ordered to the ground, and disarmed. He was held there by Perry and others until law enforcement arrived. Not a single shot was fired. The sheriff praised their quick thinking and courage, calling their actions "amazing" and urging the public to respect their privacy.

All 11 victims are expected to survive, and Gille has been charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. His motive remains unknown, but the response from the community has been clear — immense gratitude for those who risked their own lives to protect others.

This incident has sparked conversations again about the importance of quick action and the role of armed citizens in stopping violence. Derrick Perry and the other brave individuals didn’t hesitate — and because of that, many more lives were likely spared.
