Mark Consuelos Misses ‘Live’ Due to Airport Mayhem, Jerry O’Connell Fills In

If you tuned into Live with Kelly and Mark and were wondering where Mark Consuelos was, you weren’t alone. Viewers were greeted not by the usual duo of Kelly Ripa and her husband, Mark, but by a familiar face stepping in—Jerry O’Connell. Kelly addressed the switch-up right at the top of the show, explaining that Mark had been caught in a travel nightmare that most of us have probably experienced at least once.

Apparently, Mark was heading out to Los Angeles for work and left for the airport around noon. Everything seemed to be going according to plan—until it wasn’t. Hours later, he called Kelly from the tarmac to report that his flight had been delayed due to engine trouble. Not great, but at least they hadn’t taken off yet, right? As Kelly put it, “Better to find out there's an engine problem on the ground.”

Things didn’t get any smoother from there. After being rebooked onto another flight, that plane had what Kelly called a “body problem.” Yeah, apparently there was some sort of dent in the plane’s exterior, and the crew was trying to, as she said, “bang it out.” Not exactly comforting. While Kelly admits she’s not a nervous flyer, even she found that situation a little unnerving.

Eventually, Mark was booked onto yet another flight, which was supposed to take off at 7:30 p.m. But by 9:30, he was still grounded and finally called Kelly again to say they were “getting ready to take off.” At that point, even Kelly wasn’t sure if he ever made it to L.A., joking, “I hope he did.”

Meanwhile, Jerry O’Connell kept the energy light in the studio, teasing Kelly about her airline perks and making a few jokes about how Gelman— Live’s executive producer—was being “billed” for the first-class lounge he enjoyed during his own flight delay. The two had a good laugh about their respective travel woes.

One of the funniest moments? When Jerry asked if Mark got emotional when saying goodbye. Kelly quickly shot that down and said the real drama came from Mark leaving their dog, Lena. Apparently, Mark was texting all evening with questions like, “Does Lena miss me?” and “Is Lena okay?”—to the point where Kelly ended up putting one of Mark’s shirts in Lena’s crate to comfort her.

So no, there wasn’t any behind-the-scenes drama—just plain old airport chaos. And thankfully, Jerry O’Connell stepped in like a pro to keep the show going without a hitch.
