Massive EE and BT Network Outage Leaves Thousands Cut Off

So, here’s what happened recently—something that really caught a lot of people off guard. Thousands of customers across the UK were suddenly unable to make or receive calls after both EE and BT networks went down due to a technical fault. It wasn’t just a little hiccup either—this disruption affected not only mobile calls but also landlines, and even caused issues with 999 emergency services for a period of time.

The issue first started around midday on July 24th, and people quickly took to social media to report that they couldn’t connect to others through the EE or BT networks. Downdetector, which tracks outages based on user reports, showed over 2,500 people experiencing problems at the peak of the disruption. While Vodafone and Three were not affected directly, users on those networks still reported issues—but that was likely because they were trying to contact numbers on EE or BT, which were down.

BT, which owns EE, later confirmed that the outage had been caused by a technical fault affecting voice services on the network. By late Thursday, they announced the problem had been resolved and that services were back to normal. Still, the experience left a lot of people frustrated—especially those trying to reach loved ones or even make urgent calls.

The situation even affected 999 calls temporarily. Fire and ambulance services in parts of the UK, like Devon and Somerset, had to issue alerts to let people know emergency calls might not go through. Thankfully, that was resolved fairly quickly—updates from emergency services came in just a few hours later saying everything was back up.

What made things worse was that customer support phone lines were also affected, meaning people couldn’t even call in to report the issue or get help. One customer said they were trying to get an urgent refund and couldn’t even speak to anyone. Another mentioned they were stuck trying to help elderly parents with an EE-related issue and had no way to reach the company.

Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, has stepped in to look into the scale and cause of the problem. They've emphasized how critical it is for people to have reliable access to communication—especially when it comes to emergency services. Customers might be eligible for compensation, depending on how long their service was disrupted, but they'll need to report the issue to their providers to get that process started.

All in all, this outage served as a strong reminder of how much we rely on stable phone networks. While things have now returned to normal, it definitely shook a lot of trust in how resilient these systems really are.
