Preta Gil Dies at 50, Leaving Legacy of Courage, Art, and Empowerment
It’s with a heavy heart that I talk about the passing of Preta Gil, who left us this Sunday, July 20th, 2025, at the age of 50. A singer, actress, entrepreneur, and a powerful voice for authenticity, Preta was more than just the daughter of the legendary Gilberto Gil—she was a force in her own right. Diagnosed with intestinal cancer in early 2023, she faced nearly two years of intense treatment, both in Brazil and the United States, showing resilience that touched the hearts of millions.
Preta’s story is not just one of illness, but of an unyielding spirit. She didn’t shy away from the public eye during her toughest moments—instead, she embraced her reality and chose to share it. Her honesty, even about the hardest parts—like surgeries, chemotherapy, and later, the recurrence of cancer—was empowering. “I made the right choice in showing my vulnerabilities,” she said after receiving the Prêmio Faz Diferença in 2024. That choice made her journey deeply human and incredibly inspiring.

In 2024, Preta celebrated her 50th birthday with a massive party for 700 people, and also released her autobiography "Preta Gil: Os Primeiros 50" . It was raw and real—just like her. The book opened with her cancer diagnosis but also revisited defining moments in her life: her relationships, the tragic loss of her brother, the highs and lows of fame, and her identity as a proud bisexual woman who defied beauty standards and rejected societal norms.
Her career was colorful and bold. From the moment she appeared nude on her debut album Prêt-à -Porter in 2003, Preta became a symbol of body positivity and self-acceptance. Her musical legacy includes hits across pop, samba, funk, and MPB. She launched the "Bloco da Preta", which became a staple of Rio’s carnival, and collaborated with some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, including Ivete Sangalo and Anitta. She also made her mark on TV and in film, and in business—co-founding the talent and branding agency Mynd in 2017.
Even while fighting cancer, Preta remained active and visible—joining her father Gilberto Gil on stage, singing through pain, showing up masked and guarded, but present. In May 2025, she traveled to the U.S. in hopes of joining advanced cancer trials, always clinging to hope and supported by a network of family and friends.
Preta leaves behind her only son, Francisco Gil, who honored her in music and life. Her story is one of resistance, love, and transformation. She was not just a famous name—she was a movement. A woman who loved fiercely, spoke boldly, and inspired generations to embrace their true selves.
Rest in peace, Preta Gil. Your voice, your light, and your legacy will never be forgotten.
