Rabbitohs Stun Sharks With Gritty First Half Performance

If you were watching the NRL clash between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, you know exactly how surprising that first half was. Souths came into this match sitting at the very bottom of the ladder, while the Sharks were desperately trying to hold on to a spot in the top eight. So when the Rabbitohs went into half-time leading 6–2, it turned more than a few heads.

What really stole the show was the try from Tyrone Munro — and get this — it came right on the siren . The whole play was set up brilliantly, starting with Lewis Dodd and Jye Gray working the ball swiftly out to the right edge. Munro, showcasing his speed and finishing ability, dove into the corner and nailed it. The Rabbitohs, missing several key players including Cameron Murray, Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, and Keaon Koloamatangi, still managed to put on a cohesive and determined first-half effort.

Now, it wasn’t just that try that defined their performance — their defence was absolutely relentless. The Sharks had plenty of opportunities. In fact, they spent a huge chunk of the first half camped inside the Rabbitohs’ 20-metre zone. But despite 28 tackles in that area, they just couldn’t crack the line. Souths turned up every single time.

There were a few moments where it looked like the Sharks might break through — like when Nicho Hynes looked set to score, only for Lewis Dodd to somehow hold him up in-goal. Another huge play came from Alex Johnston, who intercepted a pass when Cronulla had the overlap, killing yet another scoring chance. Even when Jack Wighton gave away a penalty for an escort, the Rabbitohs stood firm.

On the Sharks’ side, Addin Fonua-Blake was taken off for a medical check — not ideal in such a crucial game — and that only added to the frustration for them. You could feel it: the Rabbitohs wanted this more. Their desperation, particularly in defence, was impossible to miss. At one point, after a knock-on from Cronulla, the Souths players celebrated like they’d won a grand final.

With the game back underway for the second half, the big question is — can the Rabbitohs keep this up? If they hold on, they lift themselves off the bottom of the table. But if the Sharks don’t turn things around, they risk dropping out of the top eight entirely. One thing’s for sure: this game’s far from over, and the first half has already delivered plenty of drama.
