Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued as Heat Persists Across the Region
Hey everyone, just a quick weather update you’ll want to be aware of — especially if you’re heading out or staying up late tonight. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has officially been issued and will remain in effect until 3 AM . So if you’re in the affected areas, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on the skies and maybe turn on those weather alerts on your phone just in case something pops up overnight.
This watch comes on the heels of an already intense stretch of weather. Dangerous and extreme heat has been gripping the region throughout the weekend, with temperatures pushing into uncomfortable and even hazardous levels. The heat isn’t just a nuisance — it’s actually dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, young children, and people working or spending extended time outdoors.

Earlier today and into the evening, conditions started becoming unstable, particularly in the western parts of the state. While the eastern side remained relatively quiet, the atmosphere in the west grew more volatile, setting the stage for severe storms to potentially develop and track across the area.
Forecasters had been warning that a shift was likely by late Sunday afternoon into the evening, and sure enough, by around 6:45 PM CDT, the warning systems were updated to reflect the increasing risk. These storms — if they do form — could bring strong winds, heavy rain, hail , and possibly even isolated tornadoes in some areas. So, it's not just lightning and thunder — there could be real hazards with this system.
The severe thunderstorm watch means that the ingredients for severe weather are present, though not every area will necessarily be hit. Still, it’s a signal to stay alert, especially since these storms could roll in while many of us are asleep.
As always, make sure your devices are charged, weather radios are on if you have them, and that you have a plan in place in case warnings are upgraded. The National Weather Service and local meteorologists will be keeping a close watch overnight, and updates will be provided as needed.
So again, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch is active until 3 AM. Stay safe, stay cool, and keep checking for updates as the situation evolves.
