Shocking Bus Crash in Eccles Leaves 15 Injured as Roof Ripped Off Under Bridge
I'm here in Eccles today, still processing what’s been a truly shocking and distressing scene this afternoon. A double-decker bus, operating on the 100 service, crashed into a low bridge at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road. The impact was so severe that the roof of the bus was completely torn off, leaving behind a devastating sight and chaos in its wake. Fifteen people were injured in the incident, and emergency services rushed to the scene immediately.
This all happened around 3:00 PM, and within minutes, Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service were on site. Ten ambulances were dispatched, along with advanced paramedics, the Hazardous Area Response Team, and even the North West Air Ambulance. It was declared a major incident at first. The paramedics worked swiftly to treat all 15 casualties before transporting them to Salford Royal and Manchester Royal Infirmary hospitals.

According to eyewitnesses, there were terrifying moments right after the crash. People reported hearing screams coming from the top deck of the bus. One local resident described how she heard the helicopter circling and immediately knew something serious had happened. She was among those who saw the aftermath up close—police, ambulances, and a badly damaged double-decker bus under the bridge.
Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed the bus was in active service and stated their current focus is on supporting the emergency response and ensuring the wellbeing of all involved. This isn’t the first time such a crash has occurred at this location—another bus lost its roof at the same bridge back in April 2023, which raises concerns about recurring safety issues in this area.
What’s especially troubling is how preventable this might have been. If this bridge has a known history of incidents like this, why hasn’t a more permanent solution been implemented? Better signage, clearance alerts, or rerouting tall vehicles could make a massive difference. For the passengers who were just going about their day—many likely heading to the Trafford Centre, Salford, or Warrington—this ordinary trip turned into a terrifying ordeal.
The roads around Barton Lane remain closed as police conduct their investigation and emergency teams continue their work. If you’re in the area, authorities are urging you to steer clear to allow responders to do their job. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected, especially those who were seriously injured.
Let’s hope this event becomes the final wake-up call needed to prevent anything like it from happening again.
