Stormy Turn After Sunny Start: July 13th Brings Unstable Weather to Brittany

Hey everyone, let me walk you through what we experienced—or maybe are still experiencing—on this Sunday, July 13th, 2025, across Brittany. It started off like a classic summer morning, with the sun shining brightly across most of the region. Skies were mostly clear, and if you were out early, you’d have noticed only a few scattered cumulus clouds. Some low clouds showed up in the southern parts of Loire-Atlantique, but nothing that spoiled the mood. It was the kind of morning that makes you want to stay outside, soak in the warmth, and enjoy the calm before the storm—quite literally.

But then things started to shift.

Late in the morning, the skies over the western parts of Brittany began to change. A thin veil of clouds crept in, hinting at the instability building up. By the afternoon, it was clear that the weather was taking a dramatic turn. A weather system pushed through, thickening the cloud cover and eventually bringing localized showers.

Now, for those in Côtes-d’Armor and Ille-et-Vilaine, it wasn’t just rain. We saw the development of convective clouds, which led to stronger, sometimes heavy, downpours and even thunderstorms in some spots. These storms weren’t just a light show either—they brought with them significant rain in short bursts, the kind that can catch you off guard if you're not prepared.

Winds also picked up noticeably. Initially calm, they shifted to the southwest by the afternoon, picking up speed and reaching gusts up to 50 km/h across much of the region. And under those storm cells? Even stronger gusts were possible, adding a bit of drama to the already intense afternoon.

Temperature-wise, the day started off warm. Morning temperatures ranged from 14°C to a balmy 20°C, making it feel quite pleasant. But as the front moved in, temperatures along the Atlantic coast began to dip. We still saw values between 26°C and 33°C from the south to the north—except for Finistère, which stayed a bit cooler. Ille-et-Vilaine even saw locally higher peaks, which only added fuel to the instability we witnessed.

Looking ahead, Monday isn’t promising a clean break. A weakened front will pass through, bringing a mix of clouds and sun, and possibly a few light showers. Tuesday’s weather remains variable, with more clouds in the north and some additional rain chances. By Wednesday, though, skies should start to clear, and temperatures look set to climb again.

So yeah, this Sunday was a classic example of how quickly summer weather in Brittany can flip from serene to stormy. If you’re heading out later today or into the next couple of days, it’s worth keeping an eye on the sky—and maybe having that umbrella close by.
