Terry McLaurin Requests Trade Amid Contract Stalemate in Washington
So here’s the latest shake-up from Washington — and it’s a big one. Terry McLaurin, one of the most consistent and respected wide receivers in the NFL, has officially requested a trade from the Commanders. Why? Because contract negotiations have completely stalled. Despite being a major asset to the team, no progress has been made toward extending his deal, and now it looks like he’s had enough.
McLaurin has been what's called a "hold-in" during training camp — meaning he reported, but hasn’t been practicing. He’s trying to avoid fines while still making it crystal clear that he’s unhappy. And now, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he’s taken things to the next level by asking for a trade. It’s a pretty firm message from a guy who’s been nothing but professional during his time in Washington.

He’s entering the final year of a three-year contract that includes a $15.5 million base salary, but just $2.8 million of that is guaranteed. That lack of security, especially for a guy who just came off his second Pro Bowl and has had five straight 1,000-yard seasons, is clearly not sitting well with him. He even voiced his frustration back on July 15, saying talks hadn’t moved in over a month — and here we are, still at a standstill.
To make things worse, McLaurin was placed on the physically unable to perform list after arriving late to camp, and had previously skipped OTAs and minicamp. All of it points to a player who feels undervalued and unheard.
Washington, meanwhile, just came off a 12-5 season and made it to the NFC Championship for the first time since 1991. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels had a breakout year, and McLaurin was his go-to guy. With other receivers like Deebo Samuel, Noah Brown, Michael Gallup, and Luke McCaffrey in the room, losing McLaurin now would be a blow to the team’s chemistry — especially after such a promising season.
The Commanders haven’t said whether they’ll grant his request, but this situation echoes similar standoffs from other top receivers like Brandon Aiyuk and Tee Higgins — who all wanted trades but ended up staying after getting new deals. Will Washington follow that pattern, or is this the end of the McLaurin era in D.C.?
Either way, McLaurin turns 30 in September, and plenty of teams — think Chargers, Raiders, 49ers, Patriots — would love to add a proven, high-character receiver to their roster. So now, the ball’s in the Commanders’ court.
