Tragedy at Bangkok Market: Gunman Kills Five Before Taking Own Life

It was a chilling day in Bangkok on Monday when a peaceful food market turned into the scene of a deadly mass shooting. The attack took place at the popular Or Tor Kor Market, located near the famous Chatuchak weekend market, which is usually buzzing with locals and tourists shopping for fresh produce, seafood, and regional delicacies.

According to Thai police, five people were killed in the attack. Among the victims were four security guards and one market worker. Two other women working as market vendors were also injured during the incident. The shooter, a Thai national, reportedly had a long-standing dispute with the market’s security personnel. After carrying out the brutal act, he took his own life at the scene.

Witnesses and a video that quickly spread online showed the suspect calmly walking through the market wearing a baseball cap, shorts, and a backpack strapped to his chest. In his right hand was a handgun, which he used in the attack. Shoppers and workers were seen fleeing in panic, and chaos unfolded within seconds. Authorities are now examining security camera footage to piece together the sequence of events.

Police General Kitrat Phanphet, head of Thailand’s national police force, has called for a thorough investigation and demanded all possible evidence, including surveillance footage, be collected and reviewed promptly.

While Thailand has relatively high gun ownership for the region, mass shootings are still not common. However, in recent years, several tragic incidents have made headlines. Just last year, a 14-year-old opened fire in a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok, killing two and wounding five. In 2022, the nation was shaken when a former police officer killed 37 people, many of them children, at a daycare centre in the northeast. And back in 2020, a soldier went on a shooting rampage in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima, killing 29 and injuring dozens more.

These repeated tragedies are fueling conversations around public safety, mental health, and gun control in Thailand. While investigations are still ongoing in this latest incident, one thing is painfully clear: too many lives have been lost in moments of senseless violence.

The Or Tor Kor Market, known for its vibrant atmosphere and premium products, is now draped in sorrow. For the families of the victims, and for those who witnessed the horror unfold, the impact will be lasting.
